John Balicki, Brunswick, President
photo of John BalickispaceJohn lives in Brunswick with his wife, Karen, and children Caitlin and Casey. John is the Associate Rector at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Cape Elizabeth and has been an adjunct faculty member at St. Joseph's College in Standish for over 10 years. As the former bicycle/pedestrian coordinator at MaineDOT, John is interested in almost every aspect of bicycling but particularly federal and state policy and funding, Safe Routes to Schools, and increasing bicycle use for transportation. He was also one of the 4,000 bicyclists who rode cross-country with BikeCentennial in 1976.

David Adams, Yarmouth
photo of David AdamsspaceDavid is a retired cardiologist who now has time to do really worthwhile things like promoting trails on Yarmouth's Bike and Pedestrian Committee, riding 35 miles a day on Elderhostel trips or on the rougher trails around his Cousins Island home with his wife Pam. David is also active with Physicians for Social Responsibility where he can work on and advocate for eco-conservation, disarmament and antiviolence. He also hopes to work toward diminishing the behavioral gulf between motorists and bicyclists in Maine.

Angela Arey, Portland
photo of Angela Areyspace is an attorney and also teaches at the University of Maine School of Law. Formerly an avid mountain biker, she now lives in Portland and has been cycling with her two young daughters, and bike commuting around town. She is a member of the Maine State Bar Association, the Maine Civil Liberties Union and the Legal Writing Institute. Angie is a new member of the BCM who is interested in bike safety education and bicyclist's rights.

David Auclair, East Winthrop
photo of David AuclairspaceDavid resides with his son Paul and fiancée Gale. He is the owner and manager of Auclair Cycle and Ski in Augusta. A Past President of the BCM, Dave is active in numerous community service organizations and advocacy groups including the Friends of the Kennebec River Rail Trail. He believes that bicycling is an important ingredient in the transportation and recreational needs of our state. He has traveled throughout the Northeast U.S. and Eastern Canada to explore bicycle facilities. His goal is to promote the development of bicycle commuting in Maine as well as to advocate safe access for novice bicyclists and children-safe, fun, and sensible. He also knows that Maine can develop a competitive advantage in tourism by becoming more bicycle-friendly.

John Brooking, Westbrook
photo of John Brookingspaceis founder of the Portland Bicycle Commuting Meetup. John has commuted on bike to his job as a computer programmer at Sappi Fine Paper since 2002. In 2005, he co-led an effort to collect and ship more than 400 used bikes to Biloxi, Miss. following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. He started the meetup at PortlandBikeCommuting.org to build community and promote the use of bicycles as transportation.

Richard Cleary, Houlton
photo of Richard ClearyspaceRichard lives with his wife, Robin, and daughter, Rachel. He is a lawyer and serving his first term in the Maine Legislature (2007-2008). He campaigned throughout his district on bicycle in 2006 and continues to ride frequently in Augusta as well as Aroostook County. He was the lead House cosponsor of L.D. 1808, the comprehensive bicycle safety law which won approval earlier this year. He is a member of the Maine Legislature's Biking and Walking Caucus and participated in the Maine Legislative Bike Tour.

Phil Coffin, Carrabassett Valley
photo of Phil Coffinspacehas been a BCM member for about 2 years. He is president of the Tri-State Defense Lawyers Association and the Maine Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and has served on several other boards, including the Portland chapter of the American Red Cross. Phil is an active member of the Portland Velo Club and is interested in government relations and bike safety education.

Joel Fishman, Rockland
photo of Joel Fishmanspacehails from Rockland and is a retired small business owner. He has been a member of the BCM for 12 years and is a founding member of the Maine Lobster Ride & Roll committee. Joel recently became a bike safety educator and completed the League Cycling Instructor course. He is an active member of the Rockland community, having spent 20 years on the board of Adas Yoshuron Synagogue. Joel is interested in bike safety education and membership development.

Nancy Grant, North Yarmouth
photo of Nancy GrantspaceNancy has been bicycling avidly all of her adult life, but her move to North Yarmouth in 1998 prompted her education and involvement in bicycle advocacy issues. She has chaired the North Yarmouth Safe Bike and Walk Ways Committee, whose efforts resulted in the construction of two miles of paved bicycle shoulders and a sidewalk through the middle of her town. She is the mother of two grown kids (Oscar and Elise), works in Information Technology at Bowdoin College, and spends much of her free time biking, swimming, running, skiing, and hiking, with her husband, Mike. She is hoping that her empty nest years include many overnight bicycle trips.

Mark Ishkanian, Readfield
photo of Mark Ishkanianspaceis director of corporate communications for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine. He chairs the board of the American Lung Association (ALA) of Maine and serves as a board member of ALA New England. A BCM member for 10 years, he is interested in communications and fundraising. Mark would like to see a multi-day bicycle event highlighting the many great places to ride in Maine.


Charley LaFlamme, Moody, Founder
photo of Charley LaFlammespaceCharley founded the BCM along with a handful of other cyclists at the 1992 Maine Bike Rally held in Newport. He is father of four (Stacey, Erin, Theresa & Ben), husband to Nina, and resides in Ogunquit. He is also grandfather of four (Lindsey, Monica, Dominic, & Marina). He's a former charter member (1993-1997) of MDOT Regional Transportation Advisory Committee, former chair of the regional bicycling subcommittee, Clean Cities, and Steering Committee Portland (1996-2000). He is a League Cycling Instructor #285 and the League of American Bicyclists' Regional Trainer for the Northeast. Charley is also an expert bicycle witness for court cases.

Tina Quinn, Belgrade Lakes, Secretary
photo of Tina QuinnspaceTina is the director of the birthing center at Inland Hospital in Waterville and leads a weekly community bike ride from the hospital. She has volunteered at Bicycle Coalition of Maine events such as the valet parking service provided at the Common Ground Fair. She also is involved with the Eastern Trail Alliance, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and the Western Maine Outdoor Club.

Dean Read, Bar Harbor
photo of Dean ReadspaceDean retired in 2005 from 35 years in banking, most recently as President of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. He now spends his time volunteering in health and community related activities such as Chair of the MDI Hospital Board, MDI YMCA Board, and over 30 years service with the American Heart Association as member of the National Board and Chair of the New England Affiliate. A long-time avid cyclist, Dean currently bikes about 6,000 miles a year, and has biked the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Natches Trace Parkway, self-supported, in the last several years. He also works a few afternoons a week at the Bar Harbor Bike Shop. His goal is to promote healthy lifestyles and to encourage people to take more control of their own health. Dean lives in Bar Harbor with his wife, Penny, two cats, and several bicycles. The Reads have two grown daughters, and a brand-new granddaughter in 2006.

Fred Robie, Freeport
photo of Fred RobiespaceFred was born in Skowhegan and has lived in Madison, Lincoln and Sanford before settling in Freeport with his wife Cathy, son Nick, and daughter Becca. Fred holds as a core value that good listening is healing. Fred helps organize the Bradbury Mountain Trail Days, the Maine Bike Expo and Bike Sculpture Garden, the Great Maine Bike Swap, Common Ground Country Fair demo rides, and the Great Osprey Bike Challenge. He is League Cycling Instructor #510. Fred also says "You can get there from here by bike, scorn fear -- RIDE FAST!"

Larry Rubinstein, Scarborough
photo of Larry RubinsteinspaceLarry and his wife Robin retired to Scarborough from New York City in 2002. They also have a "camp" on Lake Cobbossee that has been in their family for over 40 years. Larry is an avid road cyclist in the Scarborough area as well as in the Manchester/Winthrop area. He has also been known to do some bike tours including a wine tour in the Napa Valley with his brother, Peter, and their two wives. He especially enjoys biking with his young grandsons, Noah and Zev, to whom he is teaching the rules of safe biking.

Jane Self, Camden, Past President
photo of Jane SelfspaceJane lives in Camden and is a member of the Camden Rockport Bicycle & Pedestrian Pathway Committee, and the Camden Gateway 1 committee. She and her husband, Ken Pote, like to bike with their children Ben and Emily. She's often seen riding to her job at Camden Hills Regional High School. Jane is a Bicycle Safety Instructor for the BCM, and she and Ken host the Midcoast Time Trial Series.

Will Thomas, Portland
photo of Will Thomasspaceis the founder and president of Tri-Maine. He lives in Portland and has been working to educate athletes about safe and healthy cycling as part of their training. Will has also been involved with The Bike Shop, USA Triathlon and the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. He is interested in communications and public relations.

Eric Weinrich, Yarmouth
photo of Eric WeinrichspaceEric lives with his wife, Tracy, and their two children. He joined the Portland Pirates in 2006 as a player and coach after many years playing in the National Hockey League. An avid bicyclist as part of his training regiment, Eric became BCM's official spokesperson in 2007, starring in the new "Share the Road" ad campaign, and attending numerous BCM events.

Nancy White, Bethel
photo of Nancy WhitespaceNancy owns the Sudbury Inn and Suds Pub with her husband, Bill, and they share their favorite, local bike routes with inn guests. She has worked as a high school social studies teacher, bicycle tour leader and admissions director at Gould Academy. She co-chaired the Maine Bike Rally in Bethel in 2002 & 2003 and she assists with the Bethel Time Trial.
