Maine Bike Rally, July 6-8, 2007 Yarmouth, Maine
The Maine Bike Rally held July 6-8 in Yarmouth drew more than 300 participants of all ages. They biked to nearby islands, through farmland and along the coast. Despite some stormy weather, most of the more than 40 rides happened as scheduled.
On Friday night of the rally, the Bike Shop gave a slide show about their work with youth in Portland's Kennedy Park housing project. Several young people rode from the Bike Shop to Yarmouth on Saturday afternoon to participate in a bike parade, Bike Expo and ice cream social. Among the many, interesting presentations was one about the sport of Cyclo-cross, where cyclists pick up their bikes and run with them over obstacles.
This year's rally featured a new event: a sock hop on Saturday night. A Time Trial race on Sunday morning drew 91 participants despite rain.
Ken O'Brien and Eric Dunn, the co-chairs of the rally, did a fabulous job of organizing the weekend.
