Maine teenager rides unicycle through New England for college funds

RUMFORD, Maine (AP) [Excerpted] A western Maine teenager is raising funds to go back to college by riding his unicycle across New England.

Nineteen-year-old Maxwell DeMilner of Peru left Rumford on May 6th, riding his oversized one-wheeler a total of 750 miles, originally planning to be gone three weeks.

His journey will make a loop through New Hampshire's White Mountains, Vermont's Green Mountains, western Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and eastern Massachusetts before ending up back in Rumford.

All the while, he will be towing a trailer with his clothes, food, a tent, and a sleeping bag.

He needs to raise $2,000 from individuals and businesses for tuition and supplies so he can return to college in the spring of 2007.

DeMilner attended Chester College in New Hamsphire for one year but couldn't afford to return this year. He now hopes to go to the University of Maine at Farmington.

[Editor's note: Due to flooding in Massachusetts, Max's trip has been delayed and he is still on the road. You can go to unicyclemax.com to check his progress and send him encouraging emails.]
