New "Share the Road" Campaign Unveiled

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) has created a new "Share the Road" campaign to educate motorists and bicyclists about road safety and the state's new bicycle safety law. The coalition received $30,000 in grants from state agencies to help fund the campaign.

Eric Weinrich, BCM's spokesperson, appears in television and radio ads that have been airing on stations in Portland, Bangor and elsewhere in Maine. Half of the ads are geared toward motorists, while the other half are aimed at cyclists.

Weinrich, a well-known professional hockey player, conveys important safety information, including the provision in the new law that requires motorists to leave at least a three-foot clearance when passing bicyclists.

The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety provided $10,000 for creation of the television ads and airing of 74 spots earlier this summer on WCSH6 in southern Maine. The Maine Department of Transportation contributed $20,000 for additional ads appearing on radio and television stations throughout Maine in the upcoming months.
