Bicycle Coalition of Maine Receives Maine Community Foundation Grant

Augusta, Maine - The Maine Community Foundation has awarded a $4,500 grant to the Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM), the statewide organization promoting bicycle safety, education and access.

The grant will be used to survey BCM's 6,000 members and to develop a strategic plan for the organization. The grant was made from the foundation's Kay E. Dopp Fund.

"As our organization matures, it's time to take stock of what we have accomplished and what priorities need to be addressed in the years ahead," said Jeffrey Miller, BCM's executive director. "The Maine Community Foundation grant is a wonderful vote of confidence that will enable us to do important, long-term work."

Founded in 1992, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine has taught bicycle safety to more than 80,000 Maine schoolchildren as well as hundreds of teachers, police officers and volunteers. Other major achievements of the organization include:

  • Share the Road media campaigns featuring public service announcements on television, radio and in publications.
  • Advocating for bicycle-related road improvements and trail development.
  • Creation of the comprehensive BikeMaine Event Calendar.
  • Lobbying for legislation to promote bicycle safety. BCM played a key role in passage of L.D. 1808, a comprehensive revision of Maine bicycling laws that takes effect in September.

A statewide organization with offices in Ellsworth and Portland, the Maine Community Foundation works in partnership with donors and community groups to strengthen Maine. For more information, visit the foundation's website at www.mainecf.org or call toll-free 1-877-700-6800.
