Porter Cyclist Wins $4,500 Aegis Bicycle in Bicycle Coalition of Maine Raffle
Augusta, Maine - John Cote of Porter spent much of the summer biking on a 35-year-old, three-speed Schwinn, but he soon will be using a $4,500 Aegis bicycle thanks to his winning ticket in the Bicycle Coalition of Maine's Super Raffle.
On the morning of the raffle, he left his partner waiting impatiently outside Rockland High School as he dashed inside to buy one, $50 ticket before the Maine Lobster Ride. After returning home later that day, he discovered that he was the lucky winner.
"I'm really looking forward to the Aegis," said Cote, 62. He chose a dark green and black color scheme, and plans to have his name and initials painted on the bars.
Nearly 250 tickets were sold for the Super Raffle, with all proceeds supporting the Bicycle Coalition of Maine's education and advocacy work. The Super Raffle is made possible through generous contributions from Aegis Bicycles, Downeast Bicycle Specialists and the Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop.
Cote said he drives a car with a Blue Book value of $483, uses a $5 bike rack purchased at Goodwill and never could have afforded an Aegis. He bikes between 500 and 1000 miles a year, until now using either the Schwinn or a 21-speed Cypress hybrid.
Cote and his partner, Marie, have biked in New England, Florida, Texas, Missouri and several Canadian provinces. They typically ride about 20 miles a day. "I just love taking new trails and seeing new places by bike," Cote said.
Advocating bicycling safety, education and access in Maine since 1992, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine is working to make Maine accessible and safe for all residents and visitors so they may comfortably and responsibly bicycle. The BCM also promotes bicycling for transportation, health, recreation and fun to enhance our communities, environment and economy.
