Ready to Rumble

An insidious problem has crept up on bicyclists. Rumble strips, often found on controlled access roadways like I-95 and the interstate system, are being installed on rural highways, creating dangerous problems for bicyclists and leading to numerous crashes.

Bicycle organizations, including the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, have been advocating against widespread application of this pavement gouging, which is usually done on the part of the road most often used by bicyclists.

The BCM does not believe that any rumble strip can be "bicycle-friendly." Only in certain situations, with strict and specific requirements to assure sufficient and safe room can rumble strips be "bicyclist tolerated." Otherwise rumble strips threaten many popular roads that serve as the backbone of our bicycling network.
