Paved Shoulders In a 1995 survey done by the Maine Department of Transportation, 80% of bicyclists rated paved shoulders the #1 desired facility. Paved shoulders (which include signed "Bike Routes" and posted and stenciled "Bike Lanes") are safer, less expensive, and easier to maintain than separate or segregated facilities like "Bike Paths." Since the formation of the BCM in 1992, we have been pressuring the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) to pave more shoulders. With strong input from the BCM, the MDOT released a dramatically improved policy in 2000. Click here for details!
