What We Do
Working for better biking in Maine since 1992, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine has an exemplary track record of getting results. With more than 6,000 bicyclists in our ranks, we have become one of the most respected grassroots movements in Maine, and one of the most effective bicycle coalitions in the country! Some of our recent accomplishments include:
- Advocating for bicyclists' rights at the Statehouse and winning passage of some of the country's most progressive bicycling laws.
- Teaching bike safety to more than 80,000 schoolchildren across Maine.
- Training hundreds of teachers how to most effectively teach bike safety.
- Training hundreds of police officers about bicyclists' rights.
- Improving roads in partnership with Maine's Department of Transportation (MaineDOT), including rewriting Maine's shoulder paving policy, ensuring bicyclists' access to major bridges and advocating for dozens of trail projects.
- Winning national grants and state funding to produce a statewide "Share the Road" media campaign that includes television, radio and print ads aimed at both motorists and cyclists.
- Educating motorists to share the road through additions to the Maine Motorist Handbook and Maine Driver's Exam.
- Sponsoring several major bicycling events in Maine, including the Maine Lobster Ride & Roll, Women's Ride for Heart Health, Maine Bike Rally and Great Maine Bike Swap.
- Working with more than 100 schools across Maine to encourage students to walk and bike to school through the Safe Routes to School program.
- Creating "SpotME" cards to help bicyclists report road hazards to Maine DOT.
- Compiling the BikeMaine Event Calendar with listings of more than 200 events, more than 80 weekly rides and more.
- Preserving mountain bike access where trail closures are proposed.
- Co-hosting regional and national conferences promoting bicycling.
- Organizing the Maine Biking and Walking Caucus and holding the Legislative Biking and Walking Tour from the Statehouse each session.
- Providing Park and Pedal Sites and Valet Bike Parking at the Common Ground Fair and the American Folk Festival.
- Advocating for increased federal funding for bicycle projects with Maine's congressional delegation.
- Serving as a resource about all issues related to Maine bicycling and helping to start local bicycle coalitions.
Together we are making Maine a better to bicycle. We invite you to be part of the success and growth of bicycling in our great state. Your support of our important work will strengthen our efforts and is the best investment you can make to improve bicycling in Maine!
