The Great Maine Bike Swap set for Orono on April 14

Great Bike Swap in Orono in 2012.

ORONO, Maine – The Great Maine Bike Swap is returning to the University of Maine’s New Balance Student Recreation and Fitness Center on April 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The swap offers a way for people to buy affordable, used bicycles and/or to sell bicycles that they no longer need.

Hundreds of bicycles of all types will be for sale, including mountain bikes, road bikes, classic cruisers, kids’ bikes and hybrids. A large test riding area will allow shoppers to try out bicycles and advisers will be on hand to help with pricing and bike fit.

Admission is $3, with free admission for students at UMaine, the University of Southern Maine (USM), the University of New England and Southern Maine Community College as well as children 12 or younger.

New this year is an updated online bike registration system that will make it easier to sell a bike. Sellers will be able to register their bikes online before the Swaps through a simple online form that will save time and cut down on drop-off lines.

Those wanting to sell bicycles should register the bikes online at bikemaine.org/swap and then drop them off at the New Balance Student Recreation and Fitness Center between 6 and 8 p.m. on Saturday April 13, or 8 and 10 a.m. on the day of the swap.  Saturday drop-off is highly encouraged to minimize lines. To inquire about the potential for an earlier drop-off, please call the Bicycle Coalition at 623-4511.  A 15 percent commission on bike sales will support the coalition’s work to improve bicycling in Maine.

The event is produced by the Bicycle Coalition in partnership with the University of Maine.  The Orono swap attracted more than 500 people last year.

The Great Maine Bike Swap in Portland will be held at USM’s Sullivan Gym on April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  For more information about both swaps, please visit bikemaine.org/swap or call (207) 623-4511.

USM's free 6-week bike mechanics workshops start Wednesday

Maybe you ride a bike because you enjoy it. Maybe you ride a bike because it’s your way of being good to your environment.

Whatever the reason, if you ride a bike you need to know at least a little bit about that frame and those two wheels. So how does a free six-week bicycle mechanics workshop work for you?

The University of Southern Maine is offering the program beginning Wednesday, March 13 as part of the school’s push toward sustainability. Join the USM Cycle Club from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sullivan Gym spin room (Portland campus).

Come once, or come to all six of the workshops. Here’s what you’ll learn:

March 13: Intros and common tools for repair and maintenance.
March 20: What you need to know about tires, tubes and wheels.
April 3: The basics of brakes.
April 10: Shifting, derailleurs and adjustments for both.
April 17: Lube points and front hub overhaul.
April 24: Bottom bracket and wheel truing.

Bring your bike, a friend and your tools. Or, if you have none of the above, just show up and use the demo bikes and tools provided by the club. And consider giving a donation to the program so these events can continue on.
