Award-Winning Traffic-Calming Project Returning to Portland’s Woodfords Corner

(PORTLAND, Maine) June 2, 2022 – The Bicycle Coalition of Maine and volunteers from the Friends of Woodford Corner will be reinstalling last year’s award-winning traffic-calming project and an additional crosswalk treatment near Portland’s busy Woodfords Corner intersection on Thursday.

The demonstration will take place on June 2 from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m., and will include the re-installation of paint and flexible delineator posts to help create “visual friction” to slow cars on Deering and Revere Streets.

Last year, the installation at this intersection received the Project of the Year Award from the Maine Downtown Center.

An additional crosswalk “gateway” will be installed on Woodford Street near the railroad tracks to make the crosswalk more conspicuous, slow traffic, and improve the frequency of cars yielding to pedestrians.

The work is being done as part of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s Imagine People Here program, which has installed more than 30 similar projects across the state since 2015. Known as “tactical urbanism,” these projects seek to demonstrate how easy and inexpensive it can be to calm traffic and improve conditions for vulnerable roadway users like cyclists, pedestrians, and people who use mobility-assistance devices.

The Coalition has similar projects planned this year across the state.

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine works to make Maine a better and safer place to bike and walk. Founded in 1992, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine has grown into the leading bicycle and pedestrian advocacy group in the state. The Coalition believes all Mainers should have access to bikes and bike education, and we envision a future where Maine’s roads, public ways, and trails are safe and accessible, resulting in cleaner travel options, improved health, and stronger economic benefits for Maine communities.
