74 year old man killed after being struck by car driver in Ellsworth

(Ellsworth, ME) January 25, 2025 – A 74-year-old man is dead after he was struck by the driver of a 2017 Toyota Camry on RT 1A in Ellsworth. James Card, of Ellsworth, was identified as the victim of the crash, which police said happened shortly before 7:25 P.M. Friday on Bangor Road, near the intersection of Shore Road.

Investigators said Card was in the southbound lane of Route 1A when he was hit by a 2017 Toyota Camry. They believe Card was picking up tools that had fallen out of his vehicle, which was parked at the intersection of Bangor and Shore roads. Police said Card died of his injuries at the crash scene. The driver of the Camry, a 68-year-old Surry man, was not injured in the crash and was the only person in his vehicle, according to authorities. The Ellsworth Police Department said the crash remains under investigation. Once police complete their investigation, the report will be reviewed by the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office.

This is the third pedestrian fatality in Maine this year and it highlights the ongoing risks faced by all users of Maine’s roads. The Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) emphasizes the importance of Vision Zero—an initiative to eliminate all traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries through safer infrastructure, better road design, increased enforcement, and public awareness. ● Education and Enforcement: Promoting awareness campaigns about sharing the road responsibly and enforcing penalties for reckless or negligent driving.
● Data Analysis: Strengthening systems to collect and analyze crash data, ensuring solutions are informed by accurate, timely information.
