(Waterville, ME) May 20, 2025 – Timothy Ferris, a 61-year-old Waterville resident, sustained serious injuries after being struck by a tractor-trailer while crossing Elm Street on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. near the intersection of Elm and Park streets. Ferris was crossing the street outside of a designated crosswalk when he was hit by the northbound truck. He was airlifted to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he remains in stable condition

This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers pedestrians face daily on Maine’s roads. While crossing outside of a crosswalk is a contributing factor, the severity of the injuries sustained by Mr. Ferris underscores the need for comprehensive safety measures that protect all road users, regardless of circumstances.

“Our thoughts are with Mr. Ferris and his family during this difficult time,” said Andrew Zarro, Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. “This tragic event highlights the urgent need for infrastructure improvements, such as better lighting, clearer signage, and traffic calming measures, to ensure the safety of pedestrians throughout Maine.”

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine urges local and state officials to prioritize pedestrian safety by implementing Vision Zero policies aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries. This includes investing in infrastructure that accommodates all modes of transportation and fosters a culture of safety and awareness among drivers and pedestrians alike.

“Every pedestrian injury or death is preventable,” added Zarro. “We must work collaboratively to create streets that are safe and accessible for everyone, regardless of how they choose to travel.”
