Sanford Cyclist Killed in Main Street Collision: A Call for Urgent Action
(Sanford, ME) May 20, 2025 – Richard Marks, a 46-year-old Sanford resident, tragically lost his life following a collision with a motor vehicle while riding his bicycle on Main Street on May 14. According to reports, the incident occurred near the intersection of Main Street and Gerrish Street. Marks was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and later succumbed to those injuries.
This devastating loss is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by cyclists on Maine’s roadways. Our thoughts are with Mr. Marks’s family, friends, and the entire Sanford community during this difficult time.
“The death of Richard Marks is a profound tragedy that underscores the urgent need for safer infrastructure and increased awareness to protect cyclists,” said Andrew Zarro, Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. “We must prioritize the implementation of comprehensive safety measures to prevent such heartbreaking incidents.”
The Bicycle Coalition of Maine urges local and state officials to take immediate action to enhance the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. This includes investing in dedicated bike lanes, improving road signage, enforcing traffic laws, and promoting public education campaigns to foster a culture of mutual respect among all road users.
“Every life lost on our roads is one too many,” added Zarro. “We are committed to working with communities across Maine to achieve Vision Zero, a future with zero traffic fatalities or serious injuries.”
