(Norway, Maine) September 30, 2025 — A pedestrian was struck and killed Tuesday morning on Main Street in Norway near Johnston’s Auto. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim pending notification of family. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and few additional details have been made public.

This tragic death is the latest in what has become a devastating pattern across the state. So far in 2025, Maine has seen 177 pedestrian-involved crashes, resulting in 17 deaths, along with 166 bicycle-involved crashes, including 3 fatalities. These numbers are not just data points. They represent lives lost, families devastated, and communities in mourning.

“This is not normal, and it should never be accepted as the cost of moving through our towns,” said Andrew Zarro, Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. “The person killed in Norway was doing something everyone should be able to do—walking along Main Street. We need real action, not reactive condolences, to stop this public health crisis on our roads.”

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine urges state and local officials in Norway and across Maine to treat this as an urgent matter of public safety. Main Streets in our communities should be the safest, most welcoming places for people of all ages and abilities—not the site of recurring tragedy.

The continued rise in pedestrian and cyclist crashes shows that we are falling behind on the most basic goal of a transportation system: keeping people safe. Infrastructure must be redesigned to prioritize human life over vehicle speed. Vision Zero principles—focused on eliminating traffic deaths through data, design, and accountability—must be adopted and implemented without delay.

The Coalition extends its deepest condolences to the family of the victim and to the community of Norway. We remain committed to fighting for safer streets and working with partners at every level to ensure no more lives are lost while walking or biking in Maine.
