Police will conduct enforcement operation on Aug. 3 as part of city’s Vision Zero Action Plan
PORTLAND, Maine —
The Portland Police Department announced Friday that it will launch new efforts to improve traffic safety starting next week.
On Monday, Aug. 3, police will conduct an enhanced enforcement operation aimed at improving roadway safety for everyone who lives, works and travels in Maine’s largest city.

Police said increased traffic enforcement is one of the objectives listed in Portland’s Vision Zero Action Plan to reduce pedestrian incidents and make the city’s streets safer.
Over the course of the day, officers will be stationed in neighborhoods and along roadways across Portland to focus on locations where congested traffic, vehicle crashes and dangerous driving incidents have happened. Officers will also patrol through the city to address traffic violations that put people like motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists at risk.
Police said officers will focus on violations such as distracted driving, speeding, failure to yield, stop sign and traffic signal violations, impaired driving and other hazardous behavior.
“Our goal is simple: to reduce crashes and make our streets safer for everyone,” Portland Police Chief Mark Dubois said in a statement. “Traffic laws exist to protect people, and we hope this initiative serves as a reminder for all drivers to slow down, stay alert, and share the road responsibly.”
Police said Monday’s operation will be followed by increased traffic enforcement in the weeks and months ahead.
The Portland Police Department said it receives traffic complaints from residents on a regular basis, and this initiative is part of the department’s ongoing commitment to addressing those concerns through proactive enforcement and education.
The department encourages drivers to:
- Obey posted speed limits,
- Eliminate distractions while driving,
- Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks,
- Stop for red lights and stop signs,
- Never drive while impaired, and
- Watch for bicyclists and pedestrians, especially in busy areas.
Police also encouraged bicyclists and pedestrians to stay alert and follow the rules of the road.
“Safe driving is everyone’s responsibility. By making smart choices behind the wheel, as well as when walking or cycling, we can work together to prevent crashes and keep Portland’s streets safe for all,” the police department said in a news release.
