PORTLAND, Maine —
The Portland Police Department says it is investigating a crash involving a dump truck that left a 9-year-old boy injured.
Police said they responded to the crash at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Fox Street shortly after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Witnesses told police that the boy was trying to cross the street against the pedestrian crossing signal, and that the dump truck driver immediately tried to stop but was unable to avoid running over the child’s foot.
The boy was taken to Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Police said no charges have been filed in connection with the crash at this time.
Photos and video captured by Maine’s Total Coverage show a Volvo dump truck was stopped in the intersection Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the area near the intersection was affected for about 90 minutes while investigators examined the crash scene. Members of the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit responded to the scene because a commercial dump truck was involved in the crash.
The Portland Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the incident to call 207-874-8575.
This crash happened three days after three boys were struck by a vehicle on the north side of Warren Avenue towards Riverside Street, near the Interstate 95 overpass. Abdulrahman Mohammed, a 13-year-old eighth-grade student at Scarborough Middle School, was killed in the crash while two other boys, ages 14 and 15, suffered serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
“The tragic incidents involving children over the past few days are a heart-wrenching reminder of how fragile life can be,” Portland Mayor Mark Dion said in a statement. “Whether you are driving a motor vehicle, walking, or riding a bicycle, I am asking every resident and visitor in Portland to be extra mindful and alert when traveling on our city streets.”
Dion said the Portland City Council remains steadfast in its commitment to Vision Zero and eliminating serious traffic crashes, but added that officials cannot achieve this goal through infrastructure and enforcement along.
“We need everyone’s help and shared commitment to keep each other safe. Please slow down, eliminate distractions, look out for one another, and help us ensure that every child and community member arrives home safely,” Dion said.
