PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Hop on a bike and get a workout in before work – Friday is Bike to Work Day. It’s a nationwide event that celebrates riding to work. For those who don’t normally ride their bike to work, Friday is a great day to try it out – just a bike with working pedals and brakes is needed to participate.
“For me, it’s me doing my part to reduce my carbon footprint and stay healthy,” said daily biker Brian Allenby.
There are cities around the nation have Bike to Work celebrations to acknowledge the benefits of biking, which include health and reducing pollution. The city of Portland is teaming up with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine to add some extra fun for bikers in the Portland area. From 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Friday there will be coffee, juice and snacks to refuel riders before work. For anybody needing a bike tune-up, the Bicycle Coalition will offer help. There will also be a photo booth.
After work, the Bicycle Coalition is asking bikers to ride over to Bug Light Park in South Portland for pizza and snacks from 4 to 5 p.m. There will be a free water taxi shuttle from the Casco Bay Ferry Terminal to the Bug Light Boat launch from 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
For newbies to the Maine biking scene, the Bicycle Coalition has resources and information on their website.
