West Side Trail Work Day

June 13, 2020 @ 9:00 am 12:00 pm

Please join Yarmouth Community Services to help make improvements to the first section of the West Side Trail originally built-in 2011.  Please park in the areas designated on the map and walk to the work area, also designated on the map, where we will be organizing work crews.

There’s work for everyone (all abilities), and we will focus on building two berm turns and stair cuts at the base of two of our steepest inclines and widening narrow bench cuts. We could use as many of our experienced hands as can make it to tackle all the work on our list.

We have postponed our spring workday until we better understood how to work under the challenging new realities.  We have established six separate work zones to keep volunteers spread out and have plans for additional work areas in the event that turnout exceeds our expectations.

The work involves widening bench cuts above the turns, building two berm turns, cutting stairs into the slopes for pedestrians to bypass the turns, filling and hardening the trails, and trimming vegetation along the nearby trails.

Please note that the trail between Drinkwater Point Road and Fels Groves field entrance will be closed to users for safety and work efficiency.  Signage will be posted to direct users around the work area and invite them to help!

We are hoping for a larger than usual turnout and ask that you bring some tools (please mark them if you have them available including:
Shovels, Grub hoes/pick axes, Wheelbarrows, Cordless Sawzall (lots of roots to cut – we will have special blades), Cordless drills/impact drivers.

West Side Trail has been built and is being maintained by volunteers.  If you have enjoyed the trails over the years, we hope that you will take a few hours to help us maintain it.  This is also a great way for students to earn community service hours.

In these extraordinary times, we ask that you bring your own face mask in addition to work gloves and sturdy shoes (some wet areas), bug spray too.  As always, we’ll have plenty of water but sadly we won’t have chocolate chip cookies or other snacks.
