Hundreds of people take advantage of the closing of Baxter Boulevard to bike, skate and walk around Back Cove.
Bikers, walkers, roller skaters and even people who just wanted to sit in lawn chairs on the double-yellow lines took over Baxter Boulevard on Sunday, kicking off the first Sundays on the Boulevard.
Portland city officials and members of the Portland Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee gather Sunday to kick off the Baxter Boulevard closure to vehicular traffic on Sundays.
Every Sunday from May to Nov. 9, the main thoroughfare around Back Cove will be closed to motor vehicle traffic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. between Vannah Avenue and Payson Park.
“It’s a nice, safe space for everyone,” said Christina Bouras of South Portland, a member of a women’s flat-track roller derby league.
