Do you represent a school, police department, or other non-profit community service group? Do you frequently encounter Mainers who travel after dark or lack funds to purchase safety equipment?
If you answered “yes” to both of these questions, then the Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s “Walk & Bike Brightly” campaign is for you!
The BCM is currently distributing FREE sets of front and rear bike lights, as well as reflective bands, to Mainers who need them the most. The primary goal of this effort is to make traveling at night safer for both pedestrians and cyclists, but for the latter group, being bright at night is also the law!
Maine Law Title 29-A, Chapter 19, ยง2084, states that bicycles, when in use in the nighttime, must have all of the following:
- A front light that emits a white light visible from a distance of at least 200 feet to the front
- A red or amber light or reflector to the rear that is visible at least 200 feet to the rear
- Reflector material on the pedals, unless the bicyclist is wearing reflective material on the feet or ankles.
Each order is eligible for up to six (6) sets of lights and 50 slap bands, and distribution is open to schools, police departments, and other non-profit community service groups only.
If you meet these qualifications, please fill out this form.
