Group Ride #2: Portland Ride of Silence

May 15, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

FREE

The Ride of Silence strives to unite cyclists in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways.

The Ride of Silence is an annual ride held on the third Wednesday of May each year to remember the cyclists who have been killed or injured while riding their bicycles.  The event serves to honor those who have been injured or killed, raise awareness that cyclists have the right to use the road, and to ask that we all share it.

The 2019, Portland Ride of Silence will begin and end at BCM office at 38 Diamond Street.  Opening and closing remarks will be made by public officials and Lauri Boxer-Macomber, a BCM board member who is also an attorney who handles many bicycle crash cases.

The group will circle the Eastern Prom in Portland and ride down Commercial Street, up Center Street to Monument Square, and then down Congress to Pearl Street.  Riders will stay together, ride generally two abreast, obey all traffic laws, and will not ride over 12 mph, all without talking. The silence acknowledges those riders who have been killed and forever silenced.

Because the ride occurs at dusk, we ask all riders to wear white or high visibility gear, bring lights, and if possible, to tow trailers with commemorative signage. The ride will be led and followed by riders with bright lights. All riders will be asked to sign a liability waiver before participating in the event.
