BCM’s Technical Assistance Program Facilitates Walk and Bike Audits. Walk and bike audits are excellent tools to understand and gather information about current street conditions, inform local planning efforts and engage community members.
What are Walk and Bike Audits?
Walk and bike audits are exercises in which a group of people walk or bike within a specific area of a community to evaluate its safety and comfort for pedestrians and/or cyclists. Participants examine factors such as the condition of pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, ADA compliance, driver behavior, signal timing, and other relevant conditions. The audit culminates in a report shared with municipal staff documenting existing conditions, identifying safety concerns, and recommending specific short-term, medium-term, and long-term improvements. The audit informs future investments in local bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and may be used as a tool for securing bicycle and pedestrian grant funding.
