PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police are investigating a crash involving a 9-year-old boy and a dump truck on Tuesday afternoon.
Witnesses said the child was trying to cross the road against the pedestrian crossing signal near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Fox Street, according to a news release from police. A dump truck driver immediately tried to stop but was unable to avoid running over the child’s foot.
Officers responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m., and the child was taken to Maine Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information related to it to call 207-874-8575.
On Tuesday evening, Portland Mayor Mark Dion released a statement on this incident and another crash that took a 13-year-old’s life in Portland Saturday night.
“The tragic incidents involving children over the past few days are a heart-wrenching reminder of how fragile life can be,” Dion said. “Whether you are driving a motor vehicle, walking, or riding a bicycle, I am asking every resident and visitor in Portland to be extra mindful and alert when traveling on our city streets.”
“Please slow down, eliminate distractions, look out for one another, and help us ensure that every child and community member arrives home safely,” Dion continued.
