PORTLAND, Maine —
Two crashes happened within an hour of each other on Tuesday afternoon. One in Augusta, where a man was killed after his motorcycle crashed into a school bus in front of Cony High School, and the second, where a child’s foot was run over by a dump truck on Washington Avenue in Portland.
Tonight, Portland Mayor Mark Dion issued a statement due to the increase in crashes in Maine’s largest city. On Sunday, a Scarborough eighth grader was killed after he and two others were hit while walking in the roadway along Warren Avenue.
“The tragic incidents involving children over the past few days are a heart-wrenching reminder of how fragile life can be. Whether you are driving a motor vehicle, walking, or riding a bicycle, I am asking every resident and visitor in Portland to be extra mindful and alert when traveling on our city streets. The Council’s commitment to Vision Zero and eliminating serious traffic crashes remains steadfast, but we cannot achieve this goal through infrastructure and enforcement alone. We need everyone’s help and shared commitment to keep each other safe. Please slow down, eliminate distractions, look out for one another, and help us ensure that every child and community member arrives home safely.”
Both of Tuesday’s crashes are under investigation. Portland and Augusta Police are asking members of the public to contact their agencies with any information.
