Brunswick: Ride of Silence

May 15, 2019 @ 6:45 pm - 7:45 pm

Brunswick, Maine  On Wednesday evening, May 15th the Merrymeeting Wheelers Bicycle Club (MWBC) will ride in silence to honor cyclists who were killed or injured while riding and to promote sharing the road. The local “Ride of Silence” is part of a worldwide event that takes place at the same time across the USA.  It’s a free bike ride that will go no faster than 10-12 mph.  The ride starts promptly at 7 pm, after a short Wednesday night group ride.  Ride of Silence Instructions and a poem reading will happen before the Ride of Silence. Riders should meet at the town mall area by 6:45.

“We have participated in the Ride of Silence for several years now,” said Ken Saindon, Merrymeeting Wheelers Bike Club president. “Locally we ride in memory of Randall Vye, a bicyclist killed on Bath Road on May 11, 2001, Brendan Batson who was killed on Rt. 201A on May 26, 2001 and Joe Lamothe, who was killed on Rt. 196 in Lisbon last year [2017].”

The local ride of silence is a slow ride that will follow a relatively flat course that is suitable for all experience levels of bicyclists. The ride will start at the mall on Park Row, Brunswick and will travel 10 miles through Brunswick & Topsham.
