Bath Pedestrian Seriously Injured in Crosswalk Collision Near BIW

(Bath, ME) May 2, 2025 – A 27-year-old Bath Iron Works employee was seriously injured Thursday morning after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing Commercial Street in a marked crosswalk near the Route 1 bridge on-ramp. The crash occurred around 6:40 a.m. as the pedestrian was walking to work.

According to Bath Police, the driver of the GMC Sierra, a 23-year-old Wiscasset man and fellow BIW employee, was heading home after a night shift when the collision occurred. The pedestrian was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe glare from the rising sun was a contributing factor in the crash. Neither the driver nor the pedestrian showed signs of impairment.

“This is a stark reminder of the dangers pedestrians face, even in marked crosswalks during routine commutes,” said Andrew Zarro, Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. “We must prioritize infrastructure improvements and driver awareness to ensure the safety of all road users. Going to work should not be a dangerous endeavor for Mainers.”

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine urges the City of Bath and state transportation officials to assess and enhance pedestrian safety measures in high-traffic areas, especially near major employers like Bath Iron Works. Implementing better lighting, clearer signage, and traffic calming measures can significantly reduce the risk of such incidents.

“Every pedestrian injury is preventable,” added Zarro. “It’s imperative that we take immediate action to protect our community members as they navigate our streets.”
