Brunswick Bicyclist Killed in Late‑Night Hit‑and‑Run: A Call for Urgent Change

(Brunswick, ME) October 28, 2025 — On Monday night around 11:30 p.m., 23‑year‑old Silas Octavi Esquivel Perez of Brunswick was struck and killed while riding his bicycle on Old Bath Road near the Route 1 overpass. According to local authorities, the driver initially fled the scene but later returned and was arrested.

The driver, 41‑year‑old Lance Lucas‑Wallace of Brunswick, has been charged with manslaughter, operating under the influence resulting in death, and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He is being held in the Cumberland County Jail with bail set at $100,000.

This tragic loss underscores the urgent need for communities and state agencies to accelerate efforts to protect bicyclists and pedestrians. The event reflects a systemic failure to design roadways that ensure the safety of all users, not just vehicles.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Silas Esquivel Perez’s family, his friends, and the Brunswick community,” said Andrew Zarro, Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. “Every bicyclist who rides out and hopes to arrive safely deserves better than the risk he faced. This death should serve as a stark warning that we cannot continue accepting these tragedies as inevitable.”

As more people choose to walk and bike for recreation, commuting, and errands, especially during late evening hours when visibility is reduced, the responsibility falls on our transportation system to keep them safe. The Bicycle Coalition of Maine calls on municipal and state leaders to adopt the Vision Zero approach, which aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by redesigning streets, improving lighting and visibility, slowing vehicle speeds, and rigorously enforcing against impaired and reckless driving.

The death of Silas Esquivel Perez is a preventable tragedy. The Coalition remains committed to working with Brunswick and communities across Maine to ensure that no more lives are lost while biking, walking, or rolling on our roads.
