PORTLAND (WGME) — The Portland Police Department says a 49-year-old Portland man died from his injuries Tuesday after being hit by a vehicle.
Police say the incident happened around 11:28 a.m. at the intersection of Marginal Way and Preble Street.

Investigators say the driver of the vehicle was an 82-year-old Portland man.
The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and later died after being taken to Maine Medical Center.
His identity is being withheld until his family can be notified.
It’s a chilling scene the executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine has seen too many times.
“I was actually passing through shortly after this happened and it was completely shut down. You watched people trying to figure out what was going on but I knew immediately, you could see very clearly what had happened,” executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine Andrew Zarro said.

Police say no charges have been filed at this time.
Portland adopted a ‘Vision Zero Plan’ last year with a goal to eliminate all traffic deaths in the city by the year 2045.
“Change infrastructure so it’s an infrastructure that is not focused on making things easier and faster for cars, but make things safer for everyone,” president of the Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Organization Mike Dixon said.
That’s exactly what the initiative aims to do.
But Zarro says it’s an uphill climb as many pedestrians have already been involved in crashes.
“This is the first fatal pedestrian crash of this year but there have been 21 pedestrian involved crashes in the city of Portland so far in 2026,” executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine Andrew Zarro said.
